Cost per lead and last-touch attribution are the defaults because they're easy to measure. But they can mislead you. A channel that produces cheap leads with low close rates may underperform a channel with more expensive leads that consistently convert. Last-touch attribution credits the final interaction before booking, ignoring everything that led the customer to that point.

A more accurate way to evaluate performance looks at the full picture. How much demand exists, measured by traffic and engagement patterns, not just form fills. How much of that demand gets captured into your system as contacts. How much of what's captured actually gets contacted by your team. And how quickly follow-up happens, since speed is one of the strongest predictors of conversion.

These stages reveal where performance is actually breaking down. A channel might be generating significant demand that's leaking out due to capture gaps or slow response. A channel might look expensive on a cost per lead basis but outperform on cost per booked job. Without visibility into the full funnel, you're optimizing the wrong things.

How intent and lead capture can be measured

Accurate measurement requires a defined methodology. It means tracking not just what gets captured, but estimating what gets missed. It means measuring response times, contact rates, and follow-up consistency. It means connecting marketing spend to revenue outcomes, not just lead counts.

This kind of measurement doesn't require complexity for its own sake. It requires transparency about what's being measured and why. When you know exactly how performance is calculated, you can trust the conclusions and act on them with confidence.
